Asian Cup between Saudi Al Hilal and Korean Pohang - Tuesday in Riyadh
Riyadh - On Tuesday, Rabi` Al-Akhir 18, 1443 AH, corresponding to November 23, 2021 AD, Riyadh will host the 2021 AFC Champions League final, when Al Hilal Saudi Club and Pohang Steelers of South Korea meet.
Al Hilal will play the eighth final in all continental championships at King Fahd International Stadium, while Pohang previously played on this stadium in 1997 when it lost to Al Hilal 0-1 in the first match, and Sami Al Jaber scored the winning goal for the Saudi team.
King Fahd International Stadium can accommodate about 68,000 spectators, and bears the nickname "The Pearl of Stadiums", knowing that it was built in 1988 in order to contribute to the Kingdom's hosting of the 1989 World Youth Cup.
The King Fahd International Stadium is the only stadium that has hosted more than one final in the Confederations Cup, which was launched in the Kingdom in 1992, when Argentina crowned the title after beating Saudi Arabia 3-1, and Saeed Al-Owairan scored the goal of the Saudi team.
The 1995 edition of the Confederations Cup saw Denmark crowned the title after defeating Argentina in the final, while the third edition of the tournament in the Kingdom saw Brazil beat Australia 6-0.
At the Asian level, the first final was for the Saudi Al-Nasr club, which lost the final of the 1995 Asian Club Championship against South Korea’s Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma 0-1, and crowned the Asian Club Cup Champions 1997-1998 title after defeating Suwon Samsung Bluewings on the same stadium.
And between 1996 and 2002, Al Hilal won three continental titles at King Fahd Stadium, the first of which was the Asian Clubs Cup Champions after beating Japan’s Nagoya Grampus 3-1, then won the Asian Club Championship 1999-2000 when he beat Japan’s Jubilo Iwata 3 - 2, while the third victory came in 2000 through the Asian Super Cup when Al Hilal defeated Shimizu Bulls of Japan.
In 2014, Al Hilal lost at King Fahd Stadium, the final of the AFC Champions League, after drawing at home with Western Sydney Wanderers 0-0 after losing in Australia 0-1, and then in 2017 it tied with Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds 1-1 in Riyadh He loses 0 - 1 in Saitama.
Al Hilal crowned the 2019 AFC Champions League title by playing the first leg match against Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds at King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh, which ended with a score of 1 - 0, and in the second leg at Saitama Stadium, Al Hilal defeated 2-0, and crowned the 2019 champion.
The upcoming continental final, next Tuesday, will witness a full public presence, after the Asian Football Confederation approved the decision of the Saudi Federation in this regard, while maintaining the protocols for dealing with the “Covid-19” pandemic in the AFC and in the Kingdom.
