Monitoring & Analysis | BETH

Introduction

On the 34th day of the war, political pathways are retreating in the face of escalating military dynamics, with indications that communication channels between Washington and Tehran have reached a dead end—opening the door to a broader and more dangerous phase of operations.

Overview

Strikes inside Iran have continued, with recent hours witnessing attacks targeting ammunition depots and military vehicles, in addition to Revolutionary Guard barracks near Mashhad Airport, according to estimates by the Institute for the Study of War.

On the other side, alert levels remain high in Israel, with sirens sounding again in Kiryat Shmona and surrounding areas, while fragments of Iranian missiles fell in Tel Aviv, causing material damage and scattered injuries.

On the Lebanese front, operations are gradually expanding. Israeli warplanes intensified airstrikes across southern towns, including Kfara, Srifa, and Braachit, in addition to strikes on Bint Jbeil, Hanine, Kounine, and Al-Tiri.

Field developments also included the use of Apache helicopters for coastal sweeps, alongside artillery shelling and ground movements pointing to emerging guerrilla-style warfare in southern Lebanon.

In a notable development, evacuation warnings were issued to residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs, signaling the potential for a wider escalation inside Lebanon.

Diplomatically, the UN Security Council postponed a vote on a Bahrain-drafted resolution authorizing the use of “defensive force” to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, amid Iranian warnings that any such move would further complicate the situation.

BETH Analysis

What is unfolding is not merely escalation… but a restructuring of the war’s trajectory.

The collapse of political channels does not only reflect failed negotiations, but a shift of decision-making from the table to the battlefield.

Strikes inside Iran are no longer symbolic or limited—they are targeting operational infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Iranian response maintains “continuity” rather than “transformation,” reflecting an ability to sustain disruption without altering the strategic balance.

In Lebanon, the indicators are more serious…

The transition from airstrikes to aerial sweeps and ground movement suggests that the south is no longer a support front, but an independent battleground that could evolve into a prolonged, low-intensity, high-attrition conflict.

At the UN Security Council,
the postponement does not indicate de-escalation… but rather international hesitation in the face of a decision that could open the door to direct maritime confrontation.

Uncertainty Surrounds the Downing of a U.S. Fighter Jet

Iran announced on Friday that it had downed a fighter jet, claiming it was an F-35, and stating that the operation took place within Iranian airspace using an advanced air defense system.

A statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the aircraft was brought down during an air defense engagement. Meanwhile, the Iranian Tasnim agency claimed that a U.S. pilot was captured after ejecting from the aircraft. A local channel affiliated with Iranian state television reported that an American pilot parachuted from his aircraft in southwestern Iran, while the Fars agency stated that Iranian forces are continuing the search for the pilot.

In a striking account, Iranian media, citing the Revolutionary Guard, claimed that an Iranian farmer shot down the aircraft using a rifle, describing it as part of what was framed as “civilian participation in defending the homeland.”

In contrast, CNN reported that analysis of wreckage images broadcast by Iranian media suggests the aircraft is more likely an F-15, not the stealth F-35 as initially claimed in some Iranian reports.

No further clarifications have been issued so far regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
