The Kingdom continues to expand its cultural presence in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, with the launch of the official designs for the Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art project, one of the prominent landmarks in the Grand Promenade area, in a step that reflects the transformation of art into a strategic pillar in the national landscape.

Overview

The Saudi Museum of Contemporary Art, known as “SAMoCA,” is considered one of the most prominent cultural projects in the Kingdom. It is located in the JAX District in Diriyah and represents the first national museum specialized in contemporary art.

Since its official opening, the museum has become a dynamic platform attracting artists and creatives from within the Kingdom and abroad, offering an integrated artistic experience that blends Saudi heritage with modern innovation, within a contemporary environment that reflects the evolution of cultural infrastructure.

The museum features a diverse range of art forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, and digital arts, making it an open space for experimentation and interaction, and a cultural destination that enhances the contemporary Saudi visual identity.

Objectives

The project is based on a set of strategic objectives, أبرزها:

  • Empowering Saudi artists and supporting their creative practices
  • Showcasing the Kingdom’s cultural identity through visual arts
  • Strengthening the presence of Saudi art on the international stage
  • Establishing the Kingdom as a center for artistic innovation
  • Exploring the relationship between art, identity, and societal issues

Background

The establishment of the museum was announced in 2019 as part of initiatives by the Ministry of Culture linked to Vision 2030, with the aim of creating a permanent platform for contemporary art that supports dialogue and artistic experimentation.

The JAX District in Diriyah was selected as the museum’s location within an integrated project led by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, to transform the area into a global destination that brings together history, art, and creativity.

B Analysis

The museum should not be read merely as a cultural project…
but as part of redefining the Kingdom’s soft power.

Art here is no longer a complementary activity,
but has become a parallel language to the economy and politics.

Choosing Diriyah is not just a geographic decision,
but a message:
history embraces the future.

With this direction, the arts are transforming from visual display…
into a tool of global influence.
