The Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam, is hosting the 34th edition of the Tanzania International Qur’an Award, with participation from 26 countries, in an event that reflects the growing global presence of Qur’anic competitions and their role in promoting Islamic values.

The preliminary rounds will take place from 14 to 16 Shawwal, organized by the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Tanzania, with support from Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, as part of efforts to promote the care, memorization, and mastery of the Qur’an worldwide.

The competition includes two main categories:

  • Full memorization of the Qur’an (senior participants)
  • Full memorization of the Qur’an (junior participants)

The event will conclude on 17 Shawwal with a closing ceremony at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, with expected attendance exceeding 60,000 people, reflecting the significance and expanding influence of the award.

Participants are evaluated based on precise criteria, including memorization accuracy, proper recitation (tajweed), performance quality, and correct pauses and articulation, through an electronic judging system that ensures transparency and accuracy in the final results.

This edition features participants from multiple countries across different continents, including Egypt, India, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Nigeria, and Australia, in addition to other Arab and Islamic countries.

BETH Analysis
Qur’anic competitions are no longer merely traditional contests;
they have become global platforms reflecting cultural and religious presence, and contributing to building bridges between nations.

The breadth of participation and diversity of countries confirms that engagement with the Qur’an is no longer geographically limited,
but has evolved into a shared global space where values intersect with identity.

When the world gathers around one Book,
language expands… and differences narrow.
