Gulf Railway Project Set for Completion by 2030
Riyadh | BETH
The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) said the Gulf Railway project is on track for completion by 2030, as part of efforts by GCC member states to strengthen regional transport integration and support sustainable cross-border connectivity among Gulf capitals and major cities.
The project is one of the region’s largest cross-border infrastructure initiatives, aiming to facilitate the movement of passengers and freight, enhance supply chain efficiency, and reduce reliance on road freight transport, in line with sustainability goals and emissions reduction targets.
Additional Information
Objective: Establish a unified railway network linking GCC countries to enhance economic and logistics integration.
Expected Impact: Faster intra-GCC trade flows, lower transport costs, and improved transit times between ports and industrial hubs.
Strategic Dimension: Strengthening Gulf market integration and paving the way for future connections to wider regional corridors.
Analysis | Quick Reading
The completion of the Gulf Railway by 2030 marks a shift from national connectivity to regional infrastructure integration. Beyond shortening distances, the project is set to reshape the Gulf’s economic geography by creating faster and more efficient logistics corridors, enhancing the region’s competitiveness as a transit hub between Asia, Africa, and Europe. The key challenge will lie in aligning regulatory and operational frameworks across member states to ensure seamless network integration—not merely engineering completion.
BETH Comment
The Gulf Railway represents a new form of regional infrastructure sovereignty—sovereign in strengthening logistics autonomy, and regional in translating Gulf integration from concept into daily mobility networks. Its real value will be realized if operated as a unified system in standards, operations, and pricing, rather than as adjacent national segments.
