Introduction
Aseer Region is moving forward with a strategic road project linking Abha and Jazan over 130 kilometers, with an estimated cost of SAR 19 billion, aiming to cut travel time to 1.5 hours instead of nearly three.
—
Overview
Dr. Abdulqader Othman Ameer, Deputy CEO for Technical Affairs at the Aseer Development Authority, said the project cost could reach SAR 39 billion if implemented under a build–operate model.
The project is considered a major engineering undertaking, including around 26 bridges and tunnels, reflecting the complex terrain and its importance in connecting highlands with coastal areas.
He added that the project is part of a broader plan to link key cities in the region—Abha, Khamis Mushait, and Al-Majardah—under the concept of “Greater Abha,” where nearly 50% of Aseer’s population is concentrated.
Plans also include developing additional public transport systems beyond traditional roads, such as ground-based transit solutions similar to metro systems, aimed at reducing congestion, especially during peak seasons.

- Redistribution of population density
More importantly,
the region is evolving from scattered routes into an integrated network.

This road is not merely infrastructure—
it is a new path for life.
The question is no longer: What is the cost?
But: How will it reshape the region?
