Eyes across Asia turned toward the historic city of Diriyah in Riyadh, where the official draw ceremony for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 was held, in an event reflecting Saudi Arabia’s growing readiness to host one of the continent’s biggest football tournaments, amid widespread anticipation surrounding the group-stage clashes and each team’s path toward Asia’s most prestigious title.

The Situation

The draw distributed the 24 qualified teams into six groups, with four teams in each group, based on FIFA rankings, for a tournament that will be hosted in Saudi Arabia for the first time from January 7 to February 5, 2027.

Saudi Arabia, as the host nation, was placed in Pot 1 alongside Japan, Iran, South Korea, Australia, and Uzbekistan, while Pot 2 included Qatar, Iraq, the UAE, Jordan, Oman, and Syria.

The draw ceremony was held in the historic At-Turaif district in Diriyah, in a scene carrying messages beyond football itself, as Saudi heritage and Najdi identity were integrated into a globally styled presentation of the tournament.

The competition comes amid rapid development in Saudi Arabia’s sports infrastructure, following the hosting of several continental and international events, alongside the construction of modern stadiums and the expansion of transport networks and services linked to major sporting occasions.
