China ignites fruit wars with Taiwan and New Zealand
Fruit wars on several fronts, in which China is the main party, started with kiwis and ended with apples.
In May, New Zealand complained that a Chinese farmer had hacked the golden kiwi, asserting that Beijing had not supported it to preserve property rights.
And last March, China ignited the pineapple war with Taiwan, where it banned its import, justifying its decision on biological security, while Taipei considered that the reason is political and that Beijing wants to subjugate it, stressing that there is nothing wrong with its pineapple.
The third war is with Taiwan as well, but this time around sugar apples and wax apples, as China banned the import of both fruits for almost the same reason.
Pest fears, Taiwan’s response is no different from last time, a trade war with political aims.
