Amid calls for his resignation, Biden defends his decision to withdraw US forces from Afghanistan
US President Joe Biden said in a speech Monday evening that Washington’s mission in Afghanistan was never nation-building, as he defended his decision to withdraw US forces from there.
Biden added that the choice he had to make was to either follow the negotiating agreement initiated by former President Donald Trump or return to the fight.
He stated that US forces should not fight and die in a war that Afghan forces refused to fight.
President Biden emphasized that the United States had given the Afghan government everything it needed.
In his speech, he made clear that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani refused to engage in diplomacy to reach a settlement.
Biden stressed that he will not repeat the mistakes of the past by staying and fighting in a conflict that is not in the interest of the United States, stressing that America will continue to support the Afghan people.
He pointed out that Washington closed its embassy in Afghanistan and transferred its diplomats safely, indicating that thousands of Americans are orphaned from Afghanistan in the coming days.
Biden stated that what is happening now would have easily happened five years ago or after 15 years, explaining that their mission in Afghanistan made many mistakes.
And he added: “I will not back down from the decision to withdraw US forces from Afghanistan, and I do not regret it.”
This, and the US President stressed that the United States will defend its people with destructive force if necessary, noting that he will not ask his country’s forces to fight endlessly in a civil war in another country.

He stated that Afghan political leaders surrendered and fled the country and the Afghan army refused to fight.

And Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida suggested removing President Joe Biden from office after the United States withdrew from Afghanistan and the Taliban extended its control over the country.
Rick Scott said in a tweet on Twitter.
"After the catastrophic events in Afghanistan, we must face a serious question: Is Joe Biden capable of doing his job or is it time to exercise the provisions of the Twenty-fifth Amendment?"
