Report: 91% of Gaza children suffer psychological trauma
Geneva - Beth: The Geneva-based Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said that 9 out of 10 children in the Gaza Strip suffer some form of conflict-related trauma, nearly a month after the end of the Israeli military offensive on the Strip.
He mentioned the report, which was launched today under the title “I grew up another war” and documented the most prominent statistics related to the violations suffered by “the two most vulnerable groups in the besieged sector”; Women and children, that about 50% of the population of the Gaza Strip, which numbered more than two million people, are children under the age of 15, and 49% are female.
He pointed out that during the "Fences Keeper" operation carried out by Israel on the Gaza Strip during the period (10-21) last May, the Israeli forces carried out disproportionate attacks against overcrowded residential neighborhoods with a majority of up to 75% of children and women. 241 children lost one or both parents together as a result of the bombing, about 5,400 children lost their homes (completely destroyed or severely damaged), and 42,000 children had their homes partially damaged.
The report said that about 72,000 children were displaced to UNRWA schools or the homes of their relatives during the attack, while more than 4,000 children remained displaced as of the date of the report.
Mariam Dawas, a field researcher at the Euro-Mediterranean Observatory, said that she and the field team documented hundreds of cases of direct targeting of civilians in their homes, while the scale and ferocity of the attacks were unprecedented.
Dawas, who was displaced with her child after Israeli warplanes targeted her apartment building, said: “It was not much different from the three military attacks that preceded this time; the only difference today is that I was one of those I trusted, I ran with them and screamed in search of My child is among them, and I ran away from my house like them after an Israeli warplane targeted the building in which I live.”
She added, "Today, I am discussing with my little girl, Sophie, who is not more than three years old, for reasons to live, while we are going through post-traumatic stress disorder, as is the case for the vast majority of Gazans."
The report indicated that about 2,500 pregnant women who will give birth during the three months following the military attack will suffer from complications and complications in childbirth, most of them as a direct or indirect effect of the attack.
It is noteworthy that 66 children and 40 women were killed under the Israeli bombardment on Gaza during 11 days, while 470 children and 310 women were injured.
