Reports said that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard was planning to launch a strike on the US military base, “Fort McNair”, located in Washington, and targeting prominent officials in the Pentagon.

And two American intelligence officials said today, Sunday, that the National Security Agency intercepted in January messages indicating that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards had discussed in January 2021 planning an attack on the “Fort McNair” base similar to the incident targeting the USS Cole destroyer, which was struck in October 2000. To detonate a suicide bomber on board a boat that stopped next to the warship in the Yemeni port of Aden, killing 17 sailors.

Intelligence also revealed death threats to the US Army Deputy Chief of Staff, General Joseph Martin, and plans to infiltrate and monitor the base, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Fort McNair is one of the oldest bases in the United States and is Martin’s official residence.

These threats were among the reasons that prompted the Army to reinforce protection around Fort McNair, which sits alongside the newly developed Waterfront District Marine District in Washington.

City officials have opposed the Army’s plan to add a buffer zone stretching about 75 to 150 meters from the shore of the Washington Canal, which would limit access to nearly half the width of the congested waterway running parallel to the Potomac River.

The Pentagon, the National Security Council and the National Security Agency declined to comment on this issue.
