Allocating 10% of Saudi Arabia’s area to natural reserves

Updated studies and biological and social surveys to prepare the system of protected areas, with the participation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, indicated a trend towards allocating about 10.42% of Saudi Arabia’s area to reserves for the development of renewable natural resources in those areas for the benefit of mankind.

The study, which came within the document “A National System for Wildlife Conservation and Sustainable Rural Development in Saudi Arabia,” stated that 15 reserves have been implemented so far while the proposal is to protect 75 areas (including 62 land areas, 13 coastal and marine areas). The center may administer 35 reserves (15 existing reserves, 20 proposed), provided that 40 areas (proposed list) will be managed by other bodies, including the national parks of the Ministry of Agriculture in Riyadh, Asir, Taif and others, and the areas of the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, the Emirates and the Royal Commission for Jubail Stems and others.

The currently existing reserves, 15 protected areas (12 land reserves and three marine reserves), aim to protect a group of integrated natural ecosystems, and these protected areas are operated by an administrative and technical apparatus that includes a scientific director for each reserve and a head of the roving team who perform the task of ground monitoring to monitor wildlife. In the reserve, the prevention of violations and abuses, and they are assisted in that by the air traffic control team.

The 15 reserves are: Jabal Shada Reserve, Saja and Umm al-Ramth Reserve, Tessiah Reserve, Nufud al-Areiq Reserve, Bani Maarid Reserve, al-Hadhab Complexes Reserve, al-Tabeeq Reserve, Farasan Islands Reserve, Jurf Raida Reserve, Al-Awal Reserve, Umm Al-Qamar Island Reserve, and Mahaza Reserve As-Sayd, Al Khanfah Reserve, Hurra Al Hurra Reserve, and Jubail Reserve.

It should be noted that the area of ​​the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is 2,149,690 square kilometers.
