On Friday, the United Nations launched its preparations to elect a new Secretary-General, with the approaching end of the term of its current Portuguese Secretary, Antonio Guterres, in this position.

The President of the General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, and the British permanent delegate, Barbara Woodward, who currently chairs the UN Security Council, announced in a joint letter that the registration of candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations Organization would be opened.
