A police source said that a car ran over a group of people in a pedestrian zone in the western German city of Trier, killing two people and wounding at least ten others.

Public radio reported, that the police detained the driver and called on citizens to stay away from the area of ​​the accident, adding that the driver’s motives are not yet clear.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the driver deliberately headed towards the passers-by and ran them over.

The German police announced that the driver of the car who ran over pedestrians was a German citizen, aged 51, without giving further details

The German authorities later confirmed that the perpetrator of the ramming was under the influence of alcohol, and denied "any religious motives behind his attack."
