A senior commander in the Revolutionary Guard survived an attack... and the death of his guard

Iranian regime media reported that gunmen opened fire on a car carrying a "senior commander" of the Revolutionary Guards in southeastern Iran early on Saturday morning, killing his bodyguard, Mahmoud Absalan.
The regime's Iranian news agency reported that Brigadier General Hossein Salami, commander of the Revolutionary Guards in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan, was unharmed in the attack.
Mahmoud Absalan, the bodyguard who died in the attack near a checkpoint in Zahedan, the provincial capital, is the son of a senior Revolutionary Guards commander in the region.
The mainly Sunni province of Sistan and Baluchestan, close to the Pakistani and Afghan borders, suffers from turmoil. Many Sunnis in Iran complain of discrimination.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has previously accused Iran of "persistent impunity for human rights violations" in provinces including Sistan and Baluchistan.
