Saudi Arabia .. The start of "harvesting" the coffee crop in the Jazan region
Al-Dayer Bani Malik Governorate - We started harvesting coffee in the governorates of the mountainous sector in the Jazan region now.
And the beginning of the harvest begins in the month of October until January.
During the harvesting phase, the farmers take care of the coffee fruits by picking them and placing them in a special bag, before the drying stage begins by placing the coffee fruits in designated places in the shade, during which the fruits are turned for up to three weeks.
Slow drying helps the fruit retain its flavor to be ready after drying, to start another stage in the mills to separate the coffee fruits from the peels, and then the roasting and grinding stages.
The Commission for the Development and Reconstruction of Mountainous Regions in Jazan has completed the annual inventory of coffee farms, the number of farmers, and the annual production volume, which witnesses a growth in the number of farms and the crop every year as a result of the efforts of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in expanding the coffee cultivation circuit in the mountainous sector in Jazan through its program to develop sustainable agricultural rural development and targeting it sector The development, production, manufacturing and marketing of coffee to reach raising the productive efficiency of the crop, while those efforts were consistent with the Saudi Aramco initiative to grow coffee in mountainous governorates and support farmers, which was matched by the interest and keenness of farmers and their desire to reclaim their agricultural terraces and contribute to the national economy.
The Jazan Mountain Regions Development and Reconstruction Authority contributed to supporting coffee farmers by providing more than 344,000 coffee seedlings from the Authority’s agricultural research station and distributing them to farmers from 2016 until the end of last year, within the Aramco initiative, the agricultural terrace rehabilitation project, and the authority’s initiative to deliver seedlings to farmers.
According to the statistics of the Development and Reconstruction of Mountain Areas in Jazan, the number of coffee growers last year reached 1596, including 919 farmers in Al-Dayer Bani Malik governorate, while the number of coffee trees reached 269,010 trees, including 171,926 trees in Al-Dayer governorate, while the average annual production amounted to 685,536 kilograms. In the various farms of the mountainous governorates, which include, besides Al-Dayer, Bani Malik, the governorates of Fifa, Al-Raith, Al-Aydabi, Al-Ardah, and Haroub.
The annual coffee festival, which was hosted by Al-Dayer Bani Malik Governorate during the past eight years, boosted the interest in coffee cultivation as a valuable economic product, which helped in introducing the coffee product and expanding its cultivation and investing its high-quality crop.
