The West
The European press is putting France and debt at the forefront; the euro has fallen to its lowest level in 17 months amid growing concern over French debt and political gridlock, while global bond markets remain under the impact of high interest rates and energy costs. In the United States, expectations of a near-term interest rate hike are declining after weak job growth, restoring some optimism to equities.

The East and Asia
Beijing and Brussels are approaching a pivotal round of trade negotiations on October 8 and 9, with Europe preparing to use stronger tools to address trade imbalances and subsidized Chinese exports, particularly automobiles and industrial technologies. In the background, artificial intelligence and semiconductors remain a major axis of economic competition in Asia.

The Middle East
Yemen is leading the coverage as the government moves into a military operation to restore Yemen from the Houthis, while Taiz, Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea remain key to the new phase. At the same time, the Hormuz file has returned to the markets from a different angle: exports are recovering, but transport costs, insurance and logistical bottlenecks have become a fundamental part of the oil price.

Economic Concerns

The most prominent development in energy is not oil shortages alone, but the cost of getting it to market. Shipping rates from the Gulf to Asia have risen sharply, while the Group of Seven has decided to release part of its strategic reserves to limit the impact of disruptions in diesel supplies and transportation.

Saudi Arabia in the International Press

Saudi Arabia appears today through three angles: oil, Yemen and alliances. Aramco has cut crude prices for Asia to their lowest levels in nearly six years to protect market share amid higher shipping costs, while the military operations in Yemen are receiving broad attention, and the strategic committee of the Mecca Pact is meeting in Riyadh with the participation of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan.
