Saudi Arabia strengthened today, Tuesday, its national framework for governing the responsible use of artificial intelligence, as part of a broader path aimed at regulating the rapid expansion of AI applications and linking them to clear standards for safety, ethics, and risk management.

The development follows the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority’s launch earlier this year of a national framework for managing artificial intelligence risks, alongside tools for accrediting service providers and measuring the compliance of products with ethical standards, moving governance from general principles toward clearer mechanisms for implementation and oversight.

The framework focuses on protecting privacy and rights, reducing the potential negative effects of intelligent systems, and encouraging entities to adopt responsible standards when developing AI-based solutions.

The significance lies in the fact that Saudi Arabia is not only moving to build an economy that relies on artificial intelligence, but also to build rules that govern its use in parallel with its expansion.

This is the more important shift:

from asking what artificial intelligence can do, to asking how to ensure that it does so responsibly and safely.
