Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, received in Jeddah today Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of U.S. Central Command, and his accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States, in addition to the latest developments in the region.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Musaed bin Mohammed Al-Aiban, Minister of State, Member of the Council of Ministers, and National Security Adviser.

The meeting comes at a highly sensitive regional moment, as the visit by the CENTCOM commander coincides with escalating developments in the region and growing pressure on energy export routes in the region.

The publicly announced details of the meeting are brief, but the level of the meeting and its timing give it significance beyond the protocol wording.

The Commander of U.S. Central Command is the senior military official directly responsible for the theater of operations in the Middle East; therefore, his meeting with the Crown Prince, in the presence of the National Security Adviser, comes at a moment when three sensitive military files intersect: Yemen, Hormuz, and the security of Saudi oil infrastructure.

The meeting reflects the shift in Saudi-U.S. coordination at this stage to a high political and security level, while the nature of the roles ahead remains something the coming days will reveal.
