Xi Brings the Economy to Washington |

English

China is preparing a large delegation of business leaders and top executives to accompany President Xi Jinping to Washington for his September 24 summit with President Donald Trump.

The move is unusual for Xi and signals Beijing’s intention to put trade, investment and business back at the center of the U.S.-China relationship after years dominated by tariffs, chip controls, sanctions and restrictions on strategic materials.

The talks are expected to cover agriculture, investment, rare earths, semiconductors, technology and artificial intelligence.

The larger message is clear: Washington can restrict advanced technology, while Beijing controls critical materials and industrial supply chains. The relationship has become a form of economic deterrence on both sides.

Xi’s delegation may therefore be more important than any single agreement signed at the summit.

He is not only bringing business leaders to Washington; he is trying to move the economy from the battlefield back to the negotiating table.
