How are platforms designed to eliminate the moment of stopping and turn human attention, emotions, and time into an inexhaustible economic resource?

A person opens their phone to reply to a message, then finds themselves half an hour later moving between videos, images, and news stories they never intended to view.

Sometimes, they cannot remember why they opened the application or when they decided to continue, yet they keep moving their finger as though the next page might contain something they cannot afford to miss.

This may appear to be a weakness of will or poor time management, but the more important question lies elsewhere:

Does the user remain by choice, or was the platform designed from the outset to make leaving difficult?

What Is Addictive Design?

Addictive design is the construction of an application in a way that does more than serve users or meet their needs. It drives them to return repeatedly, remain for longer periods, and move from one piece of content to another without making a conscious decision each time.

The platform does not directly tell the user: Stay here.

Instead, it removes every natural moment at which they might stop and ask themselves: Do I want to continue?

In the past, a newspaper had a final page, a news bulletin had an ending, a programme had a scheduled conclusion, and a shop had a door that closed after business hours.

A digital platform, however, has no clear ending.

Whenever one piece of content ends, another begins. Every movement of the finger produces a new possibility. When the finish line disappears, stopping becomes a decision requiring effort, while continuing becomes the default.

How Are Platforms Designed?

Platforms do not rely on a single tool to retain users. They use a system of features that work together, learn from behaviour, and become increasingly capable of drawing users back over time.

Infinite Scrolling

There is no final page and no natural point at which to stop.

Content continues to appear whenever the finger moves, depriving the user of the signal that they have reached the end.

Autoplay

The next video begins before the user decides to watch it.

The decision to continue therefore moves from the individual to the system. Instead of choosing to watch, the user must make an active decision to stop.

Notifications

The platform summons users even when they do not need it.

A notification may contain an important message, an alert about a new post, or a reminder that someone interacted with their content. The objective is the same: to reopen the door the user had closed.

Variable Rewards

Users do not know when they will find an important news story, a pleasing comment, or an engaging video.

They may move through a long sequence of ordinary material before encountering something that produces pleasure, surprise, or a feeling of triumph.

The inability to predict the reward is what drives them to keep searching for it.

Likes, Comments, and Shares

The platform converts human interaction into visible numbers.

Users publish content and then return to check the number of likes, comments, and views. Over time, the value of what they wrote or recorded may become associated with the volume of engagement it receives rather than its actual worth.

Precision Personalisation

The algorithm learns what arouses the user’s curiosity, what frightens or angers them, and what prompts them to stop or share.

It then provides more content resembling their previous responses, until the platform appears to know their vulnerabilities before they become aware of them.

Temporary Content

Stories and posts that disappear after a limited period create a fear of missing something that will not remain available.

The user returns not because they want a particular piece of content, but because they fear others may see something before it vanishes.

Usage Streaks

Some applications reward continuous daily use by giving users a number or symbol representing how many consecutive days they have remained active.

Daily entry then becomes more than a habit. It becomes an achievement the user fears losing.

Easy Entry, Difficult Exit

Opening the application is quick, notifications are ready, and content starts immediately.

Disabling alerts, changing privacy settings, cancelling a subscription, or deleting an account may require more steps and offer less visible guidance.

Rapid Content Switching

Every movement of the finger carries the possibility of a new surprise.

The user does not need to search or wait. Content arrives in succession, while subjects, images, and sounds change at a speed that prevents the mind from settling on any single thing.

What Is the Objective?

The immediate economic objective is attention.

Every additional minute a user spends on the platform means another advertisement can be shown, more data can be collected, another opportunity can be created to sell or influence, and behaviour can be predicted more accurately.

Repeated use also raises user-retention indicators, increases the platform’s value to investors and advertisers, and strengthens its ability to expand its market share.

The user is therefore not merely a customer.

In many digital business models, the user’s time, behaviour, attention, and emotions become part of the product the platform sells.

A free platform does not operate without a price; the price may be the time users do not realise they have paid.

How Does It Become Addictive?

The platform operates through a recurring behavioural loop:

Cue, response, reward, and then the desire to repeat.

A notification arrives, and the user opens the application.

They find a message, comment, news story, or stimulating video and receive a small psychological reward.

They do not know when the next reward will arrive, so they continue scrolling and moving between pages.

The most influential element is that the reward is neither fixed nor guaranteed.

Users may pass through ten ordinary videos before finding one that excites them intensely. They may open the application several times without finding anything important, then later receive the interaction they had been awaiting.

This uncertainty drives repetition. Users do not know when the reward will appear, but they know it may appear with the next movement.

Over time, they no longer open the application because they made a conscious decision. They open it because they feel bored, anxious, lonely, or empty, or because they want to escape a more difficult task.

At this point, the platform changes from a tool used by the individual into an automatic response that summons itself.

Why Does Anger Perform Better?

Calm content may be read and then left behind. Frightening, shocking, or provocative content, however, drives users to stop, comment, share, and return to follow the responses.

A platform that measures success through time spent and the volume of engagement may learn that anger retains people more effectively than reassurance, disagreement spreads further than consensus, and fear brings users back more quickly than calm knowledge.

The algorithm does not need to understand the meaning of anger or intend to agitate society.

It only needs to discover that a certain type of content produces higher figures. It then distributes that content more widely and encourages producers to create more of it.

The platform no longer sells news alone. It invests in anxiety, anger, comparison, and the fear of missing out.

Human emotion can thereby be transformed from a psychological state into an economic resource.

Is Every Prolonged Use an Addiction?

Spending many hours on a platform does not necessarily mean the user is addicted.

Use may be connected to work, education, communication, or content production. It may be intensive without becoming compulsive or harmful.

A distinction must therefore be made between prolonged use, a daily habit, and compulsive or problematic use.

The situation becomes concerning when people lose their ability to stop, return to the application automatically, and continue despite knowing its effects on their sleep, work, studies, relationships, and psychological well-being.

The problem may appear when users feel anxious after moving away from their phones, check them despite receiving no notification, spend longer on the platform than intended, or repeatedly fail to reduce their use.

The revealing question is not merely: How many hours did you use the application?

It is:

Did you enter because you wanted to, or did you find yourself inside without knowing why?

Responsibility Is Not Individual

The problem is often presented as a personal weakness. Users are then told to control themselves, put down their phones, manage their time, and resist temptation.

But this view ignores the imbalance between the two sides.

On one side is an individual who may be tired, anxious, or bored.

On the other are companies employing teams of engineers, designers, behavioural scientists, and data experts who test thousands of changes to identify the colour, notification, arrangement, and timing most capable of keeping that person engaged.

It is unfair to make the individual solely responsible for resisting a product in which vast resources have been invested to make it more difficult to leave.

The problem is not merely that the individual is vulnerable, but that the system learns how to reach the moment of vulnerability.

United States | From Complaints to the Courts

In the United States, objections to addictive platform design are no longer confined to concerned families or mental-health researchers. They have reached the courts, Congress, and regulatory authorities.

Complaints focus particularly on children and adolescents. They argue that some platforms have done more than display potentially harmful content; they have designed features to increase usage time and repeated visits through infinite scrolling, notifications, autoplay, personalised recommendations, and social-engagement metrics.

In 2023, a coalition of 32 US attorneys general filed a federal lawsuit against Meta, accusing the company of designing and deploying features they alleged were intended to attract children and adolescents and keep them on Facebook and Instagram for longer periods, without adequately disclosing the potential risks.

In 2024, a group of 14 attorneys general brought similar lawsuits against TikTok, alleging that the platform used features and recommendations designed to turn repeated use into a habit that young users would find difficult to control.

Thousands of individual lawsuits, along with cases brought by schools and public bodies, were consolidated into a federal multidistrict proceeding titled “Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation.” More than 2,400 cases were pending within this proceeding in March 2026, according to the US Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.

These lawsuits allege that the platforms were designed to maximise screen time and that the companies knew, or should have known, that some features could encourage compulsive behaviour among adolescents without providing adequate warnings.

In 2026, preliminary jury verdicts held some companies liable for negligence in designing platforms that targeted young users and drove them toward excessive use. These verdicts represent an important shift because they moved the debate from responsibility for content published by users to responsibility for the product and the way it was designed.

Scientific and legal discipline, however, requires that these cases not be treated as definitive proof that every platform causes “addiction” in every user, or that the relationship between platform use and psychological disorders has been established in the same way in every case.

The lawsuits contain allegations that remain subject to evidence, defence, and appeal. Health outcomes also vary according to age, the type of content, duration of use, the user’s psychological and social circumstances, and the way the individual interacts with the platform.

The US Surgeon General has stated that the available evidence points to benefits from some forms of use and potentially profound risks for some children and adolescents, but has also explained that scientific knowledge has not yet reached a level that allows social media to be regarded as sufficiently safe for this age group.

The American Psychological Association similarly stresses that platform use is not inherently beneficial or harmful. Its effects depend on design features, content, developmental stage, individual circumstances, and the extent to which use affects sleep, physical activity, relationships, and daily life.

The American debate therefore revolves around a question more precise than simply declaring that “platforms are bad”:

Should a company be permitted to know that a particular feature increases compulsive use among minors, yet continue operating it because keeping them online longer increases its profits?

The cases have not resolved every dimension of this question, but they have produced a clear shift: users are no longer the only defendants for their inability to stop. The design of the platform itself has entered the courtroom.

How Can Platforms Become Less Addictive?

It is not enough for applications to provide weekly reports telling users how many hours they have taken from them while every other design feature continues pushing them to remain.

The solution begins by reconsidering the model itself and the relationship between a platform’s success and the length of time it captures attention.

Restoring the Moment of Stopping

Infinite scrolling can be disabled, content can be divided into pages or units, and users can be given a clear signal that they have reached the end of a particular set.

Disabling Autoplay

Playing the next video should be a decision made by the user, not a default imposed by the platform.

Fewer Notifications

Notifications can be grouped and delivered at specified times, while unnecessary alerts can be disabled by default instead of turning every minor interaction into a new summons.

Protecting Children and Adolescents

Accounts belonging to younger users require stricter safeguards, including usage limits, fewer notifications, restrictions on certain reward and social-comparison mechanisms, and prohibitions against using their data to create highly precise psychological targeting.

Algorithmic Transparency

Users have the right to know why particular content appeared, to modify recommendation factors, and to choose a chronological feed that is not subject to complete personalisation.

Genuine Pauses

The platform can remind users to stop, suspend playback after a period they have set in advance, or provide a clear exit point instead of continuing silently.

Making It Easy to Leave

Disabling notifications, cancelling subscriptions, deleting accounts, and controlling data should be as clear as registration and opening the application.

Changing the Measures of Success

If platform success continues to be measured by minutes, sessions, and interactions, its design will remain directed toward increasing consumption.

If success is instead measured by the value users receive, the quality of their experience, their trust, and whether they achieved the purpose for which they entered, design may shift from capturing people to serving them.

Another Perspective

When users open a platform, they believe they are entering a broad space in which they can choose what they want.

But the algorithm has already arranged the path before they arrive.

It has selected what appears first, what is repeated, what disappears, what provokes, and what waits behind the next movement.

Control therefore does not always lie in the content being displayed, but in the design of the path leading to it.

People may be free to move their fingers, but they do not always choose what is placed before them after that movement.

The issue is therefore larger than phone addiction. It concerns who controls the engineering of attention, who determines where the eye stops, what it feels, and when it returns.

Conclusion

Platforms are no longer merely windows through which we view the world.

They are designed environments that learn from human behaviour, reshape what people see, and continually test what makes them remain for longer.

Confronting the problem does not mean rejecting technology or withdrawing from the digital world. It means restoring the balance between the platform’s interests and the individual’s right to their own time, attention, and decisions.

Good design helps users reach what they want.

Addictive design makes them forget why they entered.

When leaving the platform becomes more difficult than entering it, the question is no longer: What does it offer us? It is: What is it doing to us?
