Science | Chasing the Shadow
Scientists affiliated with the U.S. space agency are preparing to chase the Moon’s shadow during the total solar eclipse on August 12, using a high-altitude research aircraft and balloons carrying scientific instruments.
The eclipse will cross parts of Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, northern Russia, and the Atlantic Ocean, while appearing as a partial eclipse across wider areas of the Northern Hemisphere.
The scientists are not pursuing the spectacle for its beauty alone. The eclipse offers them a rare opportunity to observe the solar corona and study the magnetic fields and winds emanating from the Sun, in addition to monitoring the effects of the sudden darkness on layers of Earth’s atmosphere.

Medicine | A Guardian Inside the Tumor
Researchers at Japan’s Nagoya University have discovered an unexpected role for an ancient immune protein known as C3, which could help improve the response of some tumors to immunotherapy.
The most important aspect of the discovery is not the protein’s presence in the bloodstream, but its local production within the tissue surrounding a tumor. When fibroblasts near the tumor produce it, C3 limits the entry of immunosuppressive cells that obstruct the body’s ability to attack cancer.
By contrast, the protein produced by the liver and circulated through the bloodstream did not demonstrate the same effect. This suggests that where a natural therapeutic agent is produced may be just as important as the agent itself.
The study linked higher levels of the protein within certain tumors to a better response to immunotherapy. Preclinical experiments also demonstrated the possibility of reproducing its effects in treatment-resistant tumors.
The findings, however, do not mean that a treatment is ready for patients. They identify a new scientific target that requires further clinical testing before its effectiveness and safety in humans can be established. Nagoya University and the published study
Space | Messages from the Boundary
NASA’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe, or IMAP, has begun making available data collected by seven of its scientific instruments, helping researchers study particles arriving from the Sun and interstellar space.
The spacecraft is mapping the region where the solar wind meets matter arriving from beyond the solar system—an invisible boundary surrounding our world and influencing the space environment.
The value of this data is not limited to distant space. Understanding particles and solar storms can help protect satellites, communications and navigation networks, and astronauts.

Climate | The Fire Is Faster
The Canadian province of British Columbia declared a state of emergency after fast-moving wildfires forced more than 20,000 people to leave their communities and destroyed homes as they approached populated areas along Okanagan Lake.
The danger posed by modern wildfires lies not only in their size, but also in their speed. Changes in wind, heat, and drought conditions can turn a distant fire into an immediate threat within hours.
Urban planning in areas close to forests must now confront a new question: Are there roads, shelters, and warning systems capable of evacuating a city before the fire reaches it?

The European Athletics Championships begin tomorrow in Birmingham and continue through August 16, marking the first time Britain has hosted the continental championship.

The U.S. Department of Defense has asked weapons manufacturers to submit plans within 21 days to accelerate arms and ammunition production and shorten delivery schedules, amid pressure placed on some stockpiles by the war with Iran.
The request reveals that military superiority is measured not only by what a country possesses at the beginning of a war, but also by the ability of its factories to replace what its forces expend at the same pace.
A missile that takes minutes to launch may require months or years to manufacture. When the rate of consumption exceeds the rate of production, even the most powerful military begins counting every shot.
