The Crown Prince discusses bilateral relations with the Spanish prime minister, while Madrid condemns the Houthi attacks and affirms its support for the Kingdom’s measures to protect its security, sovereignty, and interests

His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, held a telephone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

The two leaders discussed areas of cooperation between the Kingdom and Spain and ways to strengthen them across several sectors, in addition to reviewing issues of mutual interest.

Sánchez expressed his country’s condemnation and denunciation of the attacks launched by the Houthi militia against Saudi vessels and the threat they pose to freedom of maritime navigation in the Red Sea.

He affirmed Spain’s full solidarity with the Kingdom and its support for all measures taken by Saudi Arabia to safeguard its security and sovereignty and protect its interests.

Beyond the Call

Spain’s condemnation carries significance beyond political solidarity. Spain is a maritime nation and a member of the European Union and NATO, and its commercial interests are directly linked to the stability of the route connecting the Red Sea to the Suez Canal and then to Mediterranean ports.

The attacks on Saudi vessels therefore represent not only a threat to the Kingdom, but also a danger to European trade, shipping and insurance costs, and supply chains.

The call also reflects widening international support for the Kingdom’s right to protect its vessels and interests, and confirms that attacks on maritime navigation are transforming the militia’s aggression from a regional issue into one affecting global economic security.
