Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has announced the launch of five new logistics routes in the freight sector, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance supply chain efficiency and strengthen integration among various transport modes. This initiative supports regional and international trade while advancing the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030, reinforcing the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub amid rapidly evolving global supply chains.

Overview

The new routes represent an integrated logistics system linking Arabian Gulf ports with the central and northern regions of the Kingdom, extending to Red Sea ports and neighboring countries to the north. The network relies on multimodal transportation, combining rail and road transport to enhance supply chain fluidity and improve the efficiency of goods movement across different corridors.

These routes facilitate the transportation of various types of cargo and strengthen national supply chains, supporting key sectors—most notably petrochemicals and mining—while enhancing the flow of exports and imports. They also provide effective transit (transshipment) solutions to regional markets.

The initiative serves a broad customer base, including major industrial companies, mining firms, and leading global shipping lines, through integrated and reliable transport solutions that reduce transit times and improve operational efficiency.

Operations are managed through a comprehensive logistics ecosystem that includes the Riyadh Dry Port and several SAR freight yards located in Dammam, Jubail, Ras Al-Khair, Al-Kharj, Hail, and Al-Qurayyat, connecting with ports on both the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea. This integration strengthens connectivity between ports and local and international industrial and economic centers.

The new routes are expected to remove thousands of truck journeys from roads, thereby enhancing road safety, reducing carbon emissions, shortening cargo transit times, and improving operational efficiency. This further reinforces SAR’s role as a key national enabler of the Kingdom’s transport and logistics ecosystem.

Statement

In this context, Dr. Bashar bin Khalid Al-Malik, CEO of Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), stated that the rapid development of the railway sector is driven by the support and attention of the Kingdom’s wise leadership, and by the close follow-up of Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of SAR. He emphasized that these routes represent a comprehensive package of logistics solutions designed to enhance the efficiency and reliability of supply chains under various conditions.

Dr. Al-Malik added that the initiative is based on the integration of different transport modes and coordination with relevant stakeholders to facilitate the seamless movement of goods and improve logistics operations. He also highlighted that these routes strengthen connectivity with regional and international markets, reinforcing the Kingdom’s role as a logistics corridor linking East and West, and solidifying its position as a global logistics hub and a key player in international trade flows.

BETH Analysis

The launch of these logistics routes reflects a strategic transformation in Saudi Arabia’s transport ecosystem, with SAR evolving from a rail operator into an integrated logistics enabler supporting global supply chains. The initiative enhances the Kingdom’s competitiveness in the logistics sector and leverages its strategic geographic location to connect Asian, European, and African markets.

SAR’s new logistics routes represent a significant step toward enhancing integration between ports and industrial centers, supporting regional and international trade flows, and reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s position as a global logistics hub and a central axis in international commerce.
