Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Approves the Saudi Riyal Currency Symbol

On Thursday, Sha'ban 21, 1446 AH (February 20, 2025 AD), the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, approved the Saudi Riyal currency symbol, marking a historic step toward strengthening the identity of the national currency.

The Governor of the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA), Ayman bin Mohammed Al-Sayari, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister – may God protect them – for the approval of the Saudi Riyal currency symbol.

Al-Sayari emphasized that this significant decision enhances the Kingdom’s financial identity at the local, regional, and international levels. He noted that the implementation of the currency symbol will begin immediately and will gradually be reflected in financial transactions, commercial activities, and various applications, in coordination with the relevant official authorities.

He further explained that this initiative, aimed at promoting national pride and cultural identity, will highlight the significance of the Saudi Riyal, reinforce confidence in it, and solidify the Kingdom’s position among the world’s leading economies and G20 nations. Additionally, the initiative will underscore the increasing importance of the national currency within the global financial system.

Al-Sayari praised the relentless efforts that contributed to achieving this milestone, expressing his appreciation for all the entities involved in the project, led by the Saudi Central Bank, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization (SASO).

The newly introduced currency symbol, designed according to the highest artistic and technical standards, embodies the Kingdom’s rich culture and heritage. The symbol features the name of the national currency, "Riyal," inspired by Arabic calligraphy, and will enhance the representation of the Saudi Riyal on local, regional, and international levels. This ensures its suitability for all financial and commercial transactions worldwide.

As Saudi Arabia continues its progress toward achieving Vision 2030, the launch of the Saudi Riyal currency symbol further strengthens the Kingdom’s financial system and its growing influence on both regional and international levels.
